Free Web Resources on Health Science



9.1 WebMD: -
WebMD has created an organization that we believe fulfills the promise of health information on the Internet. It provides credible information, supportive communities, and in-depth reference material about health subjects that matter to you. It is a source for original and timely health information as well as material from well known content providers.

 9.2 WHO: -
WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends. In the 21st century, health is a shared responsibility, involving equitable access to essential care and collective defense against transnational threats.


9.3 Cochrane Library: -
The Cochrane Library contains high-quality, independent evidence to inform health care decision-making. It includes reliable evidence from Cochrane and other systematic reviews, clinical trials, and more. Cochrane reviews host the combined results of the world's best medical research studies.


9.4 eMedicine: -
Described as an open access medical textbook, over 6,500 articles are provided. You have to register, which is free, to search. Several different options for searching are available in the advanced search feature. You can search for words, images, subject areas or combinations of various search fields.

Interesting features available from this site includes a medical dictionary, a search tool for identifying medications based on the  April 2007 imprint codes on pills, a tool called “LookItMed” which allows the searcher to highlight a term within an eMedicine and information will appear in a separate box with a definition, and links to other eMedicine articles and Medline articles.




The National Library of Medicine (NLM) provides this Web site as a public service. Various NLM electronic resources are available mentioned below in detail.-

·         A database of static NCBI web pages, documentation, and online tools. These pages include such content as specialized online sequence analysis tools, back issues of newsletters, legacy resource description pages, sample code, and other miscellaneous resources. Searching this database is equivalent to a site search tool for the whole NCBI web site, with the exception of the FTP directories.

·         An extensive collection of articles about NCBI databases and software. Designed for a novice user, each article presents a general overview of the resource and its design, along with tips for searching and using available analysis tools. All articles can be searched online and downloaded in PDF format; the handbook can be accessed through the NCBI Bookshelf.

·         Accessed through the NCBI Bookshelf, the Help Manual contains documentation for many NCBI resources, including PubMed, PubMed Central, the Entrez system, Gene, SNP and LinkOut. All chapters can be downloaded in PDF format.

·         Part of the NCBI Handbook, this glossary contains descriptions of NCBI tools and acronyms, bioinformatics terms and data representation formats.

9.6 HealthGov: -
Directory of health sites from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. There are sections for general health information, health news, special initiatives, and federal agencies.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the United States government’s principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.


9.7 InteliHealth:-
Consumer health web site that provides "credible information and useful tools from the most trusted sources, including Harvard Medical School and University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Established in 1996, InteliHealth has become one of the leading online health information companies in the world.


The Patient's Network focuses on a "community approach to the delivery of health care information. It combines original material with links to dozens of other resources." The Patient's Network contains Medical Centers which are developed by patients and professionals.

9.9 Healthline:-
Healthline is both a health search engine and a provider of its own articles on medical topics. This information clearinghouse offers its own doctor reviewed articles and searches other sites that its on-staff doctors and medical experts consider to be "the top health sites on the Web."


Health portal that provides information about popular health topics, medical conditions, prescription drugs, fitness, wellness, and mental health. The site has a medical expert index to search for questions and answers by condition and doctors' names.
